Magdalene Lim: Not just how you look, but how you feel too

Since young, I’ve always been a pretty average-sized kid. During my secondary school years, I was not active in exercising or any kind of sports, till I graduated and joined a dragonboat team, where stamina and endurance was a need so I trained hard for it. However, at that point of time, I did not notice any changes to my physical body. It still looked chubby to me.

Then I started working at Wavehouse Sentosa. I started feeling self-conscious about my body, naturally. How the rest of my colleagues there have bodies to die for (literally!) and I felt really out of place with my chubby body.

As time went by though, I grew the confidence to wear a bikini top and board shorts for work (apart from it being more comfy).

I started running a minimum of 5km each day before I started work and in seven weeks, I noticed a vast difference! My tummy was gone and my thighs were smaller. That was a real confidence booster! I felt so confident in bodycon dresses and shorts.

However, that nice body went on a downward spiral as school took over all my time and exercise was pushed aside. That lack of confidence in my body came back again when I put on my bodycon dresses and it left me feeling both depressed and angry at myself for letting myself get to this shape.

It is then that one day, I felt enough was enough. I am worried for my health and my weight, so I spoke to Kelly Latimer who encouraged me to start on a clean diet and work out weekly.

I started on it right away and I am into my fourth week now. The difference may not be a lot to look at physically, but I am feeling different with this body I have now. I feel confident and that is my motivation to continue working out to achieve my ultimate goal – a healthy body!

For years, I have struggled and conformed to the lie by the world that thin is beauty. I have since broken out of that lie and I now believe that a healthy body is what’s important, not a thin one. I can be plus sized and healthy at the same time!

I am still embarking on my fitness journey with Kelly and I am grateful to have her as my inspiration and motivation. Definitely, I am loving myself for what my body is and working towards a healthy body!
