Tam Nguyen: Do something about it

It’s not a sad story you haven’t heard of before, but at least this one does have a happy ending…well actually, it’s still being written.

I grew up most of my life chubby, fat, husky, “big-boned” – we go by many names in the United States to help make kids and teenagers feel better. I was bullied often and it didn’t help that my name rhymes with things like HAM or SPAM.

At my worst, I weighed 188lbs (85kg) when I was about 16 years old and I was only 1.67m tall. Fast forward to today, I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been and the fittest I’ve ever been.

What I’ve learned so far…

• There is NO DIET; it’s a lifestyle that you choose to be healthy.
• It really is a journey and not a destination.
• When you focus on your health, rather than just how you look, you will feel and be happier.
• It’s okay to not be content with your body, but don’t be ashamed, just do something about it.
• Your body is your temple, take care of it, but it’s also fortunate that you can really experiment to see what works for you, there is no one size fits all.
