Although Singapore is a safe country, it is still important to learn how to protect yourself in times of danger. In this female-only self-defence class conducted by national wrestler and KAPAP Academy owner Qin Yunquan (whose arm is in a cast) on 23 July, she shared her personal journey about her struggles with body image and how she overcame them.
Today, Yunquan has gone from a skinny girl lacking in confidence to a social activist seeking to empower ordinary people with self defence skills.
During the 1.5-hour self-defence seminar, Yunquan first showed a shocking video screening on real crimes to educate on the realities of actual crimes. She then conducted a practical session to demonstrate a variety of unarmed defence, knife defence and ground defence techniques.
Unlike what many assume, protecting yourself doesn’t involve flipping or throwing someone around, or kicking or punching. The key point is learning how to recognise danger and how to react without having to use force or violence.
