Always thinking of herself as a confident person, Megan (@megankhaw) loves to dress up and try new fashion styles. She only started to feel insecure about herself when people started commenting about how big she was or how she needed to lose weight.
It got to a point where she developed a form of mild eating disorder, but thankfully a friend helped her through it and eventually overcame it. Her faith in God also helped her to see that she will still be loved regardless of her size.
Megan wants to break the stereotype about “big girls” – being plus sized doesn’t mean she is eating junk food all the time and not taking care of her body. It has kept her alive for 24 years and working out regularly – with spinning and HIIT – has made her feel strong!
“To be very honest, I’ve always considered myself a confident person. I’ve loved to dress up and try new fashion styles, even if it was different from what everyone else was wearing. But it was only when people started commenting about how big I was or how I needed to lose some weight, where I started feeling insecure about myself. That would get the ball rolling for an avalanche of bad thoughts that just wouldn’t go away – I always thought I had to do something about my weight because I wasn’t adhering to society’s beauty standards.
At 13, I started joining a group of friends for church, I thought it was all good because no one commented about my weight or my body, they were my friends without any consideration about how I looked.
When I was 14, I received a handwritten greeting card from a church friend and at the end it contained these words – “Actually, if you lose some weight, you’re actually very pretty one!”
This was probably a trigger that made me feel like absolute shit. And I even fooled myself into thinking that “Oh, these people will think I’m pretty enough after I lose some weight”.
It’s so warped and obviously now I still remember those words, it’s stuck with me. Of course I didn’t overcome it by calling that person out on their bullshit because I wasn’t so ballsy then, but I just shut it all out and decided to focus on myself, focus on what I thought of myself, focus on learning to love the curves that I’ve been blessed with.”
lululemon has expanded their top styles to fit sizes 0-20. Megan is wearing the AirSupport Bra in Brier Rose/Pink Puff and the Fast and Free High-Rise Short 6″ in Red Merlot.
