Shaheera: Everything is possible with determination and hard work.

I was small-sized and thin from the time I was in secondary school up to my ITE days. After I gave birth to my first child, I realised I have this “baby belly” which every woman has after giving birth. The first criticism started when I was working in a retail store. My friends and I were sitting and chatting during break time when they looked at me and said,”Hey, you have a fat tyre there at your belly.”

Since then, they always teased me, often telling me I am thin but my belly was ugly, especially when I sat down and all the fats can be seen. I was angry and sad at the same time but I did nothing about it until I was 23 and I saw a post about a fitness competition where we had to undergo physical transformation.

Without hesitation, I joined and over three months, I hit the gym at least five to six times a week and learnt to lift weights. I also learnt Muay Thai. When I started to see results, I became more enthusiastic and I wanted more. From my weight of 43kg, I gained muscle mass and weighed in at 49.

I didn’t win anything at the competition but I did something for myself. I am not competing with others but with myself after all. After the competition, I left my retail job and became a personal trainer and a kickboxing trainer.

My aim is to be a role model and to inspire others.

Late 2015, my passion got crushed when I was involved in a bike accident with my fiance. I had to undergo two surgeries to my knee cap and my tissues are gone as well. Doctors told me I may need one year to be fully recovered.

After the stitches were removed, I didn’t attend any physiotherapy and I became disappointed because I had to stop going to the gym. I have started going to the gym again, but the movements I can do are restricted due to the injury.

I am not letting this setback dishearten me; slowly but surely, I am going to pick back my fitness routine and fulfil my dream of becoming a freelance personal trainer and kickboxing trainer. I hope I can continue to inspire other ladies out there, because everything is possible with determination and hard work.
