Roxanne Gan: Being stressed and unhappy makes you fat

Most of us, at one point in life, think that life will be better if we become skinny. It seemed that being skinny was attractive and beautiful. However, we failed to realise that everyone is born with different bodies.

Some people lose weight when they face stress. Some people are more unfortunate – they gain weight instead. I was unfortunate and I still belong to this category if I let myself become vulnerable.

When my life went downhill in 2014, I started becoming really unhappy, and gained a lot of weight. In order to lose weight I gained, I exercised everyday but the numbers on the weighing scale never stopped increasing. I’m sure I’m not the only one facing this struggle. It took me a (long) while to realise that the root of the problem was attributed to stress and unhappiness.

I started focusing on developing a positive mindset and doing things I enjoy. I walked away from the drama in my life, and re-ignited my passion for teaching (yoga). Slowly I started finding myself again and the weight started to shed.

There was no special diet or exercise regime. People started telling me I look radiant and happy, that I look amazing. I have never felt and looked better. I believe that when people and unforeseen circumstances knock me down, I get up and emerge stronger. I am stronger than I think I am.

It was not an easy journey, but keep believing in yourself. Start being positive and the right attitude will take you to where you want to be in life.
