Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterised by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, most often the liver and kidneys. Preeclampsia usually begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy in women whose blood pressure had been normal. Symptoms include sudden weight gain and swelling (edema) — particularly in your face and hands. And I was diagnosed with this complication for both my pregnancies.
At one time, my weight ballooned to 99kg! I used to be overly concerned with post-pregnancy stretch marks, loose flaps and folds around my waist. I even wore Spanx to hide the muffin top. But ever since I decided to pick up my fitness and to pay attention to my health, I see my body as a powerful machine that can accomplish great things.
My body may not be lean but it’s mean. I still have my spare tyre, but this body has done some amazing things. It has ran numerous marathons, completed two half-ironman races and produced two amazing children.
