Stanley Ng: Health is wealth

It started 2.5 yrs ago when I was 116kg. I have everything in my life as a result of my hard work with my wife – we stay in a landed house, we drive luxury cars, we have a chauffeur and we have country club memberships. And of course, I had all of that weight!

The turning point was this day when I brought one of my sons to watch a movie. After the movie, he realised he left his iPad at the cinema. I rushed back up the stairs to get it for him, but I nearly blacked out when I reached the seat in the theatre. My body was cold for a second and it got me worried.

I went to see a doctor and he advised me to exercise and shed the excess weight before I lose everything in life and my hard-earned fruits of my labour.

My good friends encouraged me to do it for my family, but there were also bad friends who were dampened my spirits instead (the jealous ones who mocked me for having money but being fat).

Determined to turn my life around, I started walking, then running, swimming and cycling. In a year I lost almost 30kg and then I went on to lose another 10kg. I thank my good friends for standing by me, but I also want to thank the bad friends because they drove me harder to prove them wrong.

Ultimately, just do this for yourself and your loved ones. You can have all the wealth in the world, but if you don’t have the health, then the wealth counts for nothing.
